Julia/n - a character intro

Evernight instituted this very fun thing on Thursdays called the Coffeehouse. It is on Evernight Reader's Group on Facebook, and it's a bit of a game where authors plop one (or more) of their characters in a coffehouse and see what happens. 500 words is the limit.

Last week I really had quite a lot of fun introducing Julia/n, one of the two main characters from Woman as a Foreign Language. Like the book, also this short intro has quite a few autobiographical bits!

"Julia hoisted her skinny butt to the top of the tall stool at the bar and made eye contact with Pilar, the beautiful Peruvian waitress, who smiled and promptly came over, polishing a cup as she went.
“The usual,” said Julia, and Pilar stared.
“You mean the usual-usual?” she asked. Julia was a regular, but in the evenings. Julia nodded. Sometimes the day just started like that.
Pilar fetched a tumbler, poured an inch of Lagavulin (sixteen years, no ice), and passed it over.
“Bad morning?” she asked.
“Beastly,” said Julia. She licked her lips so the blood-red lipstick would not stick to the glass and took a good-sized swig. The first sip of whisky traced a path of fire in her empty innards, which she relished in full, with her eyes closed.
“Well, that’ll clear your airways for the day ahead, all right,” said a thoroughly impressed male voice beside her.
Julia opened her eyes and turned to take in the unwelcome sight of a burly fellow, about fifty, in the rumpled suit of the travelling salesman on a two-day trip, bald as an egg on top, with a thin comb-over carefully spread over the shiny, spotted baldness. Perched high on her seat Julia had no choice but to stare in morbid fascination at the hairdo. Everything else was a blur.
The egg smirked, called for coffee, and gazed longingly into Pilar’s spectacular cleavage as she poured him a mug. Julia sniffed.
“Ar, I’d stick my face in there, all right,” muttered the egg, chuckling, and Julia nearly spit her single malt across the bar onto the mirrored wall in front of her. ‘Christ, me too,’ she thought, shooting the guy a sideways glance, ‘but jeez, man, be cool, can’t you?’
“And you?” asked the egg turning briskly towards Julia again and considering her choice of breakfast beverage. “You look like a lass who knows how to have fun! What’s your name, babe?”
“Julian,” said Julia, in her deepest, grittiest voice. “Darling,” she added, staring straight into his eyes with her most captivating smile.
Pity she was just a tenor. There are days when a rumbling basso profundo would be more satisfying, but even so, it was quite the treat to watch his eyebrows shoot up and his chin drop down. He blinked twice, stammered, then he collected his briefcase in one hand, his coffee in the other (he spilled half of it in his hurry) and scuttled to the farthest end of the bar.
“Well, that’s sorted,” said Julia cheerfully, and Pilar grinned and winked at her, wiping the coffee spill from the bar. The day was looking up already."

*Julia/n is coming soon (ahem) in Woman as a Foreign Language. S/he doesn’t always swill 16 yo Lagavulin for breakfast.*

Now that the topic of gender variance is being more openly talked about, there is a tendency to stress the more extreme manifestations of it. But "transgender" does not necessarily mean acute dysphoria and full blown sex-reassignment medical procedures. As always the whole truth is a lot more nuanced than that...

I wrote Julia/n in honour of all those peole, and they are many,  who can be gender-fluid in their everyday life with relative ease, and with the occasional dash of humour.

The visual inspiration for Julia/n was actually several people, all capable of this wonderful gender fluidity... first of all the beautiful Russian model Daniel/Danila Kovalev, and his almost doppelganger, German model, Paul Boche. And last but by far not least, the delightful Eddie Redmayne as Lili Elbe in "The Danish Girl"

"...Julia felt impossibly and awkwardly tall, as she invariably did, to this day, in the vicinity of short people. It was rather embarrassing, in fact. In her youth, she had worn flat shoes and walked in a contrite, hunched way that had made her look even more gawky. In time, she had come to the conclusion that flat shoes in her size bore a sinister resemblance to canoe boats, and that however much she hunched down, she’d still be six feet tall in her socks.
“So I’m a tall lass,” she had finally decided, “well, sue me.” And she had thrown all her flats out, taught herself to walk in heels like a pro, and started strutting her stuff. Life had improved quite a bit after that. It was not perfect, but it had improved."

September New Release - Casey Moss - Transcending Fire

Today in the Wyvern's Lair we have a nicely fitting title, with Dragons, Dens, and of course, plenty of fiery heat! Say hello to Casey Moss with her Transcending Fire. Comments on the gorgeous cover? Jay Aheer, Evernight's cover artist, has outdone herself with this one!
But I'll let Casey do the talking:

"Hello! It’s been quite some time since I’ve had a release, and now I can say all that’s changed. A big thank you to Katherine for allowing me to visit today and share my story Transcending Fire. This erotic, futuristic, dystopian story based around different motorcycle gangs has had quite a journey to get to this point. Perhaps one day I’ll share the two-plus-year jaunt this story went through to find a home. Luckily, it finally has. Even with all the trials it went through, I still love this story. It’s one of my favorites that I’ve written, and one that I didn’t get tired of during the editing process either. Yay!

A man dealing with an Earth in chaos. A woman from an alternate universe hoping to find her destiny. Two motorcycle gangs and a real bad ass who wants to ruin everything. What’s not to like?"

Hunter Macario wants one thing—a place to belong. When given an opportunity to solidify his position in the Devil’s Thunder MC, he takes it.
Dragon’s Clan member, Safaia King, believes she’s found the man from her people’s legend and her dreams. She has one goal, even if he’s in a rival club—to make Hunter hers and keep him safe so he can fulfill their destiny.
After Hunter makes a huge mistake, he’s sent to where Safaia lives—an alternate universe called The Den. In this new world, sex, battles, and secrets abound. Hunter must survive The Den to right some wrongs or else he could lose everything he’s ever gained, including his home and Safaia’s love.

Here's an excerpt to tickle you...

A wicked glint lit her eyes, and a playful grin spread across her face. She smoothed a hand down his hard chest. “I love the definition of your muscles, Hunter, how they shudder beneath my fingers when I touch you.” Inch-by-inch, she continued sliding her hand down his torso. She moved her hand between his skivvies and skin. Saf circled his cock and stroked him in time with the motions of his fingers within her. Desire pulsed through his body, setting it aflame. She pressed her face against his chest and playfully bit his pectoral as she rode his hand.
Adrenaline and arousal increased his breathing rate, and a warm buzz raced through him. The pull between them seemed so intense, undeniable, as if they had to be together or perish. He felt like one of the club’s customers addicted to black chip and needing a fix before he went crazy with want. And his drug of choice?
Safaia. Always and forever Safaia.
He wanted to eat her up. “I want to taste you. Lick up your juices and have you squirm beneath my face.” Hunter yanked down her jeans and repositioned her until her ass was at the edge of the boulder.
Sinking to his knees, he placed himself between her legs. Looking forward to tasting her sweetness and feel her softness after facing the harsh realities of his life, he traced a line of gentle kisses along her inner thigh from her knee to her pussy and then fastened his mouth on the sensitive folds between her legs. When he dipped his tongue into her canal, she shifted her butt to allow him better access. He reached up and snaked his rough hands under her shirt, concerned only for a moment whether she enjoyed or loathed the coarse touch of his dry, work-worn skin. She moved the cloth and her bra out of the way.
Seems she doesn’t mind.
Pushing away all his thoughts and focusing on her—his carnal treasure—Hunter kneaded her tits while he teased her clit. He loved the taste and scent of her musky flesh and lapped up her essence as he said he would.
She grasped his head, weaving her fingers in his hair. “Oh, Great Universe. This is. This is.” She panted and grappled with his locks as a low, deep moan rolled from her throat. “I think I’m going to come.”
The first night they’d met, their lovemaking had been hot and fast, more wham bam thank you than let’s linger and relish this. This time, though, he wanted to savor her, make her feel all sorts of naughty pleasure as he took his own.
Saf bucked and tried to scooch away, but he grabbed her hips and kept her from moving away from him. Unrelenting, he tongue fucked her. She struggled and wriggled, but he continued his assault, plunging his tongue in and out of her, licking up her wetness, and nipping at her clit. Safaia pressed on the back of his head and lifted her ass. Spasms racked her body. She cried out his name.
Bringing her to orgasm thrilled him, but his selfish streak came forward. He wanted to enjoy her and feel his own pleasure, so he rose, stepped back, and removed his jeans.

Editing pains

"It gave me one more wrinkle in my arse, however: which is to the good,no doubt," said one of my favourite characters in one of my favourite books (Barret Bonden in the Aubrey-Maturing series, by Patrick o'Brian), meaning that he had learned a new thing the hard way.

Well, I earned a major wrinkle in my arse while editing WaaFL, which is that while books can be quoted (with due credits) with relative impunity (there is at least a wide grey margin to the concept of fair use), song lyrics are not, absolutely not, to be touched. Even very old songs (up to 95 years) that have been sung and resung to within an inch of their life by any number of artists. Apparently the copyright on song lyrics, unlike the laughable joke that "protects" the rest of us, is a real thing.

Ok, I am not here to complain about the state of the world (I'd never finish!), but just to ruminate on the pain of editing a perfectly crafted story (if I say so myself, but then WaaFL is an Editor's Pick at Evernight, so it can't be just me!), which was fairly interwoven with songs, tiny snippets of songs which carried so much of the characters' moods, thought processes, association of ideas...

We are told, as writers, to show, not tell, and it seemed a good idea at the time, to pinpoint these things through songs that were relevant at the time for the characters. You know how some songs "sing louder" to you at certain times of your life... and tell something about you, and where you are in your journey.

Well, removing this quotes however minuscule, was a truly painful bit of surgery, and it often required some serious rethinking of how to signpost the characters' emotional path. I owe a milion thanks to my awesome editor Karyn for holding my hand through my major freak out, and helping me through the upheaval with infinite patience and simpathy, not to mention with good ideas and genius insights.

Sometimes the title of the song alone (which, unlike the lyrics, can be lawfully used) was enough to carry the meaning, but sometimes a paraphrase of the text had to be crafted, more or less successfully, or a whole quote had to go entirely, and its place in the narrative had to be taken by more or less considerable bits of narrative.

Some of these changes came out surprisingly well, which goes to show that sometimes a challenge can bring out good things. Some are less smooth, but all in all, I think, now, that the story will survive. I could have taken the song theme out entirely, but I think it was so deeply rooted in the nature of the characters that it would have been to much of a blow to the story. It's a bit of a compromise, but I hope it still works.

I certainly will not use songs again, though.

I was fairly certain, when I got the dreadful news that the lyrics had to go, that the whole MS was dead and buried.
Big edits require a bit of a grieving process. It takes some weeping and ranting and weeping again before you can accept the fact and be constructive and go on with life. Well. It is done now, and life goes on.

New release - Lynn Burke - Abel's Obsession

I have the lovely Lynn Burke again already at the Lair today, not for the Backlist Party but with spanking (ahem) new release!

A young man of religious fervor and self-control, Abel Beiler has every intention of honoring his parents and being baptized into the Amish church. The woman with red curls and flashing green eyes in the back of a convertible, however, makes Abel wonder what life with the English might be like.

He strives to withstand temptation, but the memory of the woman he yearns to dominate, coupled with the explicit images in his cousin’s filthy magazine, threatens his restraint.

Red, his sinful obsession, haunts his shameful dreams and becomes a secret part of his life. When faced with truth beyond faith, Abel must decide where he belongs—with the Amish community, or the woman who owns his heart.

Excerpt:
Much later and hoarse from singing for two hours, my curiosity overrode my better sense, and I followed Eli into the hayloft of their barn. While I held the kerosene lamp, he climbed high into the rafters and returned with a magazine clutched in his hand.
“Got this from my new English friend, Toby.” He sat on a bale, opened the magazine, and turned it toward me.
Lust kicked me in the gut, and I couldn’t speak.
A naked woman lay spread eagle and bound by ropes to a bed, a blindfold and some sort of ball gag in her mouth. A man loomed over her, whip in hand. Tear streaks lined the woman’s face. Red slashes marked her thighs. Wetness coated the pink folds of her sex, glistening, and set my mouth to watering.
The image burned into my brain—submission in an entirely different way than the Old Order’s definition of the word. Spirituality is submission, is what had been reiterated in my ears since childhood. Self-surrender. The willingness to give up oneself to the community and Gott’s chosen leaders.
I soaked in the sinful picture, and for the first time in my life wanted power. Wanted control. I wanted a woman’s submission like the man in leather beside her owned. Unable to tear my gaze off the image, I struggled to swallow.
“Didn’t know people actually did this shit.”
Eli’s curse, the first I had heard from him, barely registered past the blood rushing in my ears. My body tensed as longing to be the man standing over that woman, whip in hand raced through me faster than any thoroughbred—or car.
The image of Red flashed in my mind, and suddenly it was her bound to the bed in the picture, breathing heavily, trembling, and begging for me…

Lynn Burke is a full time mother, voracious gardener, and scribbler of spicy romance stories. A country bumpkin turned Bay Stater, she enjoys her chowdah and Dunkin Donuts when not trying to escape the reality of city life.

Oldies Goldies - Backlist Party - Elyzabeth M. VaLey

We have come to the last special date of my backlist party! Here's my homage to the joy of older titles, those books that stayed in our hearts and we don't want to ever ever forget. I will be hosting eight romance authors (every Tuesday and Friday all through August! stay tuned, there may be giveaways!) with their favourite titles from their own backlist. The backlist party is going out with a bang with my dear friend Elyzabeth M. Valey! I will let her do the talking!

"A Dragon’s Heart, A Demon’s Blood started out from a writing prompt given to me by my Wednesday Brief group. The first prompt that brought to life the idea of mixing dragons and demons were: “His eyes were as green as…”
Suddenly, something shifted in the air and he found himself rising instead of falling. Was he dead already? Had he died before reaching the concrete sidewalk? He cracked open his eyes and looked up into the face of his savior. Two thoughts rushed through his brain before he fainted: her eyes were as green as the meadows back home and that he had to get away from anything that reminded him remotely of home.
Of course, things changed as A Dragon’s Heart, A Demon’s Blood developed but you’ll find a wink to the flash when you read the novel.
Soon after, another prompt arose “I’d like to make you an offer…”And there was Adrian Ormonde, looking at me with those green eyes framed by dark lashes and a fearless attitude that even surprised the queen of the Demons.
Stepping back, she released his locks and slightly shook her head. What had come over her? She always prided herself in holding the enemy’s gaze. This was a first.
Once Adrian was born, I couldn’t put him away and his story started to unfold until it became A Dragon’s Heart, A Demon’s Blood. I hope you enjoy it."

Legendary bounty hunter Adrian Ormonde is no ordinary man. His life is filled with secrets and questions, blood and lust. His only concern for 150 years has been survival and discovering the truth behind his demon-dragon nature.
Until he meets his new assignment: Victoria Green.

Victoria Green has felt eyes watching her every move ever since she can remember. Then, Adrian appears. The eyes vanish but new dangers arise as she falls for the mysterious hunter. Cast into an ancient conflict between dragons and demons, Victoria must trust Adrian’s skill to be enough to protect her from both the outside world and that which grows within her.

Chance brought them together but will love and passion be enough to keep them joined? Or will the other forces at play in the dragon-demon worlds destroy them forever?

Reviewers love this book!
"... lots of action, adventure, erotic and sinful sex scenes ... This book was fantastic and has you turning pages to see what would happen next. It was a very entertaining read that did not disappoint at all. This book was a hot (SCORCHING HOT) read that draws the reader deep into the story..."

"...  A Dragon’s Heart, A Demon’s Blood by Elyzabeth M. VaLey is not part of a series but I can easily see a series coming out of this book. I want to know more about this world that Ms. Valey created. I am hooked! I had a hard time putting this book down I was so enthralled with it."

"... The dragon and demon combo rocks this story with heat and passion. I especially like Victoria's characters as she emerges from a scared insecure young woman into a force to be reckoned with..."
